KILBURN COSMOS 13 - HARINGEY RHINOS IIs 3

KCRFC B’s achieved their second Middlesex Merit Table victory by beating Haringey Rhinos 13 – 3 on Saturday. Winger Anthony Koporo scored 2 tries and scrum half Paul Nolan kicked a penalty goal.

The Kilburn pack – without a regular front row – out played the opposition and provided their backs with a high percentage of possession. This allowed the Cosmos to play their usual open running game which turned the game into an exciting contest.

A Haringey infringement at the breakdown of play allowed Paul Nolan to put Kilburn 3 – 0 in lead with a penalty. Some clever running by full back Simon Rae put Anthony Koporo over in the corner for the first try of the match. Haringey replied with a penalty to make the score 8 – 3 at the break.

In the second half, Kilburn continued to enjoy territorial advantage but were unable to convert this into points due Haringey’s solid defence. Kiwi fly half (“first 5”) Jared Horsfall - who up to now had played his usual fearsome combative game - decided to spin the ball wide and the tactic worked. Both Andy’s on the wing (Gbingie and Koporo) had some fine runs and were unlucky not to cross the try line on a number of occasions. In the final quarter forward Ben Zaug linked up with backs and skilfully sent Andy Koporo over the line for his second try of the match.

Haringey continued to ‘battle it out’ in the forwards; but Kilburn had an upper hand and played with flair and precision which did not go unnoticed by the opposition. At the end of the day Haringey are a good bunch of guys who – like the Cosmos – aim to play a clean and open game. The problem over 5 subs appears to have been a communication breakdown between the club coach and the second team captain.

A special mention to Jon Church was has never played prop before for the Cosmos but ‘stepped up to the plate’ to take on a very experienced Haringey front row.
