KCRFC 2XV 29 - Haringey 2XV 17 A great scoreline for Kilburn Cosmos 2XV was the reward for a hard day at the office as Haringey battled it out but gave way to superior handling and tactics by the home side. From the outset Kilburn were determined to run at the visitors, whose sloppy kick off was gathered by prop Phil Morgan and taken into contact over the halfway line. Support meant the ball was recycled quickly and spread out to the backs who began an upfield surge. Good defence by Haringey forced a scrum which put a less experienced Cosmos pack under pressure. Well drilled Haringey forwards had the upper hand at the scrum for most of the afternoon - forcing the Cosmos pack to dig deep and to their credit they turned over the superior Haringey tight five when it counted most. There was no dispute over the superiority of the Home Side in the lineout however, where Jon Trout dominated the Jumpers and gathered in the pinpoint throws of Chris Protherough, ably supported by tighthead prop Shane Honna, who bossed the line. Captain and Lock Simon Huxtable effectively marshelled his players to provide a platform in the loose play to turn the rucks and mauls in clean ball for the Kilburn backs. Jared Horsfall and Perez Laport constantly tested the visitors defence, Horsfall at one point making a run over 50 metres and touching down for great converted try. Half back replacement Rohan McNaughton also made his mark on the game with a series of darting runs from the back of the ruck and maul, fighting his way through a scrabbled defence and was eventually rewarded with a try. The rest of the day belonged to the forwards, who were engaged in an even battle with Haringey in the loose. Jeremy Schragge gave almost everything he could to the defence, making his presence felt in almost every situation with some huge tackles. Shayne Whyte provided the experience and some clever play at the back of the line out earned him a try, with an almost identical try following for Simon Huxtable. Intensity levels dipped in the second half, by number 10 Andy Allan kept Cosmos spirits up with constant chatter and encouragement, adding to his effective presence on the pitch which saw the ball distributed to the backs with style and panache. The last score of the day was made by Hooker Chris Protherough who made a man-of-the-match effort all game and his excellent support running was rewarded with a try. Haringey made every effort to reduce the scoreline but a late surge against a tired Kilburn was never going to be enough. The game was alive until until the final whistle and the great effort by both sides stand to their credit. Kilburn 2XV play Hammersmith in the Middlesex Merit Table on 19 Jan, and continue their bid for promotion to division 2.
