KILBURN COSMOS 8 - OLD MILLHILLIANS 6

A heroic block from Aly Bursey protected two precious points as the Cosmos moved clear of the relegation zone in Herts/Middx Division One with an 8-6 win at Old Millhillians.

The Kilburn flanker charged down a last-minute drop goal attempt to preserve his side's narrow lead at the end of a hard-fought contest against fellow strugglers Old Millhillians.

It looked as if OM were attempting to play mind games when they kept Kilburn waiting at the scheduled kick-off time, but that didn't affect the visitors' start to the game.

Prop Ben Zaug charged through the OM lines to steal the ball at the kick-off and only a knock-on reprieved the home side as Kilburn established their superiority in the three-quarters.

Paul Nolan, Hayden Dawkins and fly-half Andy Allen made several breaks or fed the ball to paceman Peter Donaldson, while replacement hooker Chris Protherough filled in well after a rib injury forced Zaug off.

Declan McGee, at tight head, and loose head Phil Morgan managed to neutralise several OM drives and the home side had only a penalty to show for their efforts.

Neither team could achieve a decisive breakthrough until late in the first half, when Donaldson linked up out wide with Theo Freed, who dashed over to score in the corner.

Another penalty early in the third quarter snatched away the Cosmos' lead and, although the visitors pinned them into their own 22, OM held firm.

Eventually Kilburn forced a mistake which put them within easy range of a penalty goal and Allen slotted it over to put them 8-6 up.

As the game reached its climax it became a furious bout of end-to-end rugby, and Kilburn's scrambling defence held on in the closing minutes as Bursey's intervention sealed the victory.
