KILBURN COSMOS 10 - OLD MERCHANT TAYLORS 22

Kilburn put up a spirited fight against the second top side in Herts Midd 1, and would have lost by a single try but for a last minute interception try under the posts which gave the home team a more comfortable scoreline but one that didn't reflect how close the game was.

From the first whistle, Kilburn's hopes for a positive start were dashed by a superb attack from OMTs who pinned them back to their tryline. Kilburn were steadfast however and absorbed wave after wave of attacking ball, never allowing the OMT forward to have it all their own way and holding steady in the set piece scrums against a far heavier front row. With each step up in the pace, Kilburn responded with an equal and even step up themselves.

Finally in possession of the ball and out of their own half however, Kilburn's attack was blunted by an equally solid OMT defence in the midfield. Even forward play in the scrum, the loose and the lineout meant and Kilburn's failure to make use of paceman Peter Donaldson on the wing meant the game was static for the best part of the first half. OMTs edged try out of nothing in the second quarter when a collapsed scrum neutralised part of the Kilburn defence and allowed a centre to dive over for a converted try.

The Second half was far more explosive affair and Kilburn put themselves in the driving seat with some superb forward play which made space for the backline to deliever some text book drawing and passing. An overlap on the right meant that Donaldson had acres of space and for a rare moment in the game the top of the table team was made to look very ordinary. A Second, this time earn by the forwards as Aly Bursey capitalised on clean ball from a ruck on the OMT tryline put Kilburn ahead for a few moments in again some superb teamwork by the visitors made a mockery of the form book.

Once again though the game settled into a stalemate until at the turn of the third quarter an excellent midfield move by OMT took the ball down the middle of the park and put OMT 5 points up. Blocked out of the rest of game by the OMT midfield shut-down, the Cosmos mounted an increasingly desperate attacks to break the deadlock but OMTs held firm and kept them out. Finally, pinned back to their own line, a brave Cosmos move designed to keep the ball alive and move it 100m downfield was undone immediately by a OMT interception which gave them a try and comfortable win on the stroke of full time.
